Construction Competition Hosted by UNC Charlotte During Fall 2020 Semester

Categories: General News

Normally, Construction Management students participate in the ASC Regional Competition each fall semester. In fall 2020, the ASC Competition was cancelled due to COVID. A virtual competition was created locally so that our students could benefit from this experiential learning opportunity. Twelve students from the Civil Engineering Technology and Construction Management Programs formed 2 teams to compete in the Virtual Construction Competition.

The teams of students worked through virtual meetings and the campus computer lab over the course of a month to develop a Statement of Qualifications in preparation for a bid day event in November. Teams from Western Carolina University and Clemson competed in the event. Student teams were given 8 hours with a set of plans to produce a sequence of construction, safety plan, schedule, and cost estimate for a 90,000 sf multi-story commercial building (currently under construction).

The following Friday, the teams took part in a virtual post-bid interview presentation, and were thoroughly questioned by industry representatives from: Barringer Construction (GC for the project), Vision Ventures (owner of the project), Whiting-Turner, Lithko, Primoris, and Lennar Homes. Special thanks to faculty members Glenda Mayo, Jake Smithwick, and Ben Smith who mentored the UNC Charlotte teams and to our industry partners at Barringer Construction, Vision Ventures, Whiting-Turner, Lithko, Primoris, and Lennar Homes.
